The Training Sight
Saita sensei, seen in the pictures
of the Archer, lectures to us on kyudo once a month. These lectures
are called "Gensoku no Kai" which means the group is lectured
on the basics of kyudo. It has been held more than 60 times since 1992.
One of the members have passed the exam to become a Kyoushi,
and six of them have passed it to become a Renshi. It starts strictly
at seven o'clock and lasts for two hours. In order for the lecture to begin on time, we put on the kimono and make preparations early. At first we do Shinpai ( to pray to the Gods for
safety ). Then we all read about " Raiki Shagi" and "Shahokun"
mentioned on the Maxim corner. We start to do Reisha( to draw two
arrows by rule , straining the mind). After we finish drawing our arrows, Saita sensei gives
his opinion about our Reisha and indicates ways to improve our kyudo.
Then we start to draw two arrows, paying attention to what he has suggested.
Though we only draw four arrows, we feel contented and tired as if we have practiced for a long period of time.

The pictures above are of the sight of "Yawatashi" ( to draw two arrows to purify the Dojo before a competition or a ceremony).

Usually we put on our kimono or our dogi at the Dojo. To bend a bow is not only to draw an arrow but also it involves all of our actions from when we enter to the dojo until we leave. One important aspect is "Ikiai" which is where movements and breathing are combined.
